Dietary supplement (biologically active supplement, BAA)

Dietary Supplement (Biologically Active Supplement, BAA) is a food product consumed in small, defined amounts in addition to the regular diet. It is a concentrated source of nutrients, including proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals (this list is not exhaustive), and is manufactured in the form of tablets, capsules, dragees, powders, liquids, or other forms that are taken orally with food or added to food within physiological norms and considered necessary or beneficial for maintaining human health.

Dietary supplements can be added to individual food products, considering the levels specified in relevant sanitary measures, as well as produced for direct consumption as a standalone food product. They can contain a wide range of nutrients and other ingredients, including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, fiber, various plants, and herbal extracts.

In Ukraine, dietary supplements are regulated as a food product according to the Law of Ukraine “On Information for Consumers Regarding Food Products.” In addition to the law, the order of the Ministry of Health No. 1114 dated 19.12.2013 “On Approval of Hygienic Requirements for Dietary Supplements” applies. The hygienic requirements provide information on the form of release, maximum concentrations of each vitamin and/or mineral in the recommended daily amount, and maximum content of specific nutrients or other substances characterizing the product. The hygienic requirements also obligate market operators to pay attention to the labeling (labeling) of dietary supplements. The labeling of dietary supplements should include:

  • Name of the food product – “dietary supplement”;
  • Names of the categories of individual nutrients or other substances that characterize the product or indicate the origin of such individual nutrients or other substances;
  • Amount (portion) of the dietary supplement recommended for daily consumption;
  • Warning not to exceed the recommended daily amount (portion);
  • Indication that dietary supplements should not be used as a substitute for a balanced diet;
  • Warning that the product should be kept out of the reach of children

Labeling and advertising of dietary supplements should not include claims regarding possible treatment, pain relief, testimonials, endorsements, or advice associated with the treatment or alleviation of diseases, as well as statements that may provoke negative psychological reactions.
